The Haserot Angel in Cleveland, Ohio

Posted On 07 Nov 2014

Cleveland’s Lakeview Cemetery contains a number of famous graves including those of presidents and business moguls, but its most striking grave marker may be the unsettling statue known as Haserot’s Angel.

The stoic angel is seated in the marble gravestone of one Francis Haserot. This life-size bronze statue of a seated angel holding a staff in a posture of command is actually named "The Angel of Death Victorious" although its ominous name is not its most unsettling feature. Due to an effect of weathering and erosion on the bronze, the statue appears to be weeping black tears at all times. Combined with the impressive sculpting work of the piece itself, this lacrimal feature attracts a number of visitors and tourists each year.
