Need a getaway? Amazon has created a new website for those of us who crave those spontaneous adventures from time to time. The site, Amazon Destinations, focuses on local getaways. Amazon Destinations is a branch of Amazon Local which hopes to save customers up to 75% on spas, restaurants, entertainment and more. It is one of Groupon’s and LivingSocial’s competitors.
As of right now the site offers hotel selections in Los Angeles, New York and Seattle reported TechCrunch. The local aspect of the getaway allows Amazon to focus more on forming relationships with hotels rather than dealing with a flight and hotel package. Particularly, Amazon wants to build ongoing relationships with hotels so there are consistent deals rather than just when hotels needs to fill their rooms.
According to Skift, Amazon spokesperson Tom Cook had this to say about the new site, “We created Amazon Destinations to solve a problem most travelers face: how to easily plan and book a local getaway trip. Interestingly, more than 40% of all U.S. domestic leisure trips are short-term getaways of 1-3 nights, and many of these trips are to nearby, drivable destinations…However, travelers often have a hard time planning local getaways. It’s difficult to know where to go, the process is labor-intensive, and people often miss out on finding great places to stay.”
This is part of Amazon’s attempt to deliver more than just material goods to its customers.
