Getting Over Aviophobia-Fear Of Flying
Getting Over Aviophobia-Fear Of Flying
Aviophobia in short is an irrational or unwarranted fear of flying. Often times, it can be associated with other fears such as claustrophobia (fear of being in an enclosed space). Unfortunately, if you have aviophobia it can negatively impact your life. Face it, flying is one of the most common methods for transportation; and sometimes, depending upon your destination, it could be the only method. So if you are one of the many sufferers of aviophobia, try these 5 steps to help overcome your fear of flying and start soaring high.
Step 1 – Acknowledge It.
First and foremost, you have to acknowledge you’re free. If you do not recognize you have a problem, you will never be able to overcome your anxiety. Plus accepting you get anxious is one of the ways to help reduce it.
Step 2 – Learn More About It.
Most people who suffer from aviophobia are most concerned with take-off, turbulence, and the landing. By learning more about the process, you can understand more about what is common during a flight (ex. sounds, sensations, etc.); and in turn, will help to reduce the fear associated with the unknown.
Step 3 – Use Distractions.
The most effective way to keep your mind off of flying is to find some way to distract yourself. Read a book, talk with your neighbor, listen to music, there are plenty of ways to keep yourself entertained.
Step 4 – Be Realistic.
Overcoming a fear doesn’t happen overnight. You have to work towards it and increase your comfort levels prior to your actual flight. Set small goals; and remember to avoid things that can increase your stress level like sugar or caffeine.
Step 5 – Figure out How the Best Way to Manage Your Anxiety.
This could include meditations, acceptance, medication, and more. Sometimes the best approach might be to face the issue head on, and conquer it by immersing yourself in it. For aviophobia, try learning how to fly or travel to a few places on trips requiring you to fly.
