5 Things You Never Knew About Italy
Venice, Rome, Pisa, Italy is full of exquisite destinations; so it’s no surprise millions of tourist visit the country every year. From near and far to return visitors and newbies, Italy has a sense of magic that keeps its visitors coming back for more. However, not everything is always common knowledge. If you plan on taking a trip to the boot shaped country, remember these 5 important tips.
1. Always Have Cash
Unlike other countries, not all establishments accept credit or debit cards. Always make sure to have a variety of notes (cash) available for use. A good rule of thumb is if you don’t have it in notes make sure to check with the business before making a purchase.
2. Whenever Possible, Order Standing at the Bar
There’s a reason Italians are always seen standing while drinking their lattés and cappuccinos. It’s actually cheaper to stand than it is to sit while enjoying your coffee and pastries. Next time you decide to stop for a quick coffee, remember to order your caffé al banco (at the counter).
3. American PepperoniIsn’t Peperoni
When visiting Italy, if you want an American style pepperoni pizza, order it with salami picanti (or spicy salami). Peperoni in Italian means sweet peppers.
4. Always Take Your Receipt
Unlike many other countries, there is a tax police known as the Guardia di Finanza. When you leave an establishment, they may ask for your receipt. If you cannot present it to them, the shop keeper could be fined. Always keep your receipt until you are at least 100 meters away from the establishments before discarding it.
5. Never Tip
Yes, you heard me correctly. When you’re visiting Italy, do NOT tip. Italians tend to view tipping as you trying to buy the person off, and can actually get quite offended.
